A New Neighbor – A Noble Purpose

Despite frigid temperatures, the Gold Star Families Memorial Monument dedication attracted a large crowd that included military servicemembers, the families of military personnel killed in action, and Vermont Governor Phil Scott (pictured) who said, “We can never repay you for what you’ve endured, but I hope this is one small thing we can offer to show that we don’t take your sacrifice for granted.” (Mark Collier.)

On Friday, November 10, 2017, President Richard Schneider and others representing Norwich University joined members of the greater Northfield community for the dedication of the Gold Star Families Memorial Monument in Center Park.

Groundbreaking occurred in October, and construction included the removal of old benches and placing new, stone benches around the monument. Center Park, which lies adjacent to the Norwich campus across from Cabot Science and the Kreitzberg Library, has long been used by students and faculty for activities and outdoor classes.

The monument is the only one of its kind in Vermont, and all are encouraged to visit and reflect on the sacrifices it represents. – Jacque E. Day
