Cadet Major Rebecca Sweem ’16 was recognized by the Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States (AMCSUS) with a 2016 Leadership Award. At the time of the award this past February, Sweem was serving as the Cadet Regimental S1 OIC in charge of professional development for 19 cadet officers and NCOs on her staff, and as Naval Battalion XO, responsible for the training, administration, morale, and welfare of the 300 midshipmen in NROTC battalion.

A perennial Dean’s List student who majored in mathematics, Sweem was also a four-year varsity athlete and captain of the women’s cross-country team. The award was announced at the 2016 AMCSUS Annual Meeting, attended on Sweem’s behalf by Norwich University President Richard W. Schneider and Commandant of Cadets Colonel Russell Holden ’73. A 30-second video of Sweem’s acceptance speech was broadcast at the AMCSUS banquet. Upon her May graduation, she commissioned into the U.S. Navy.
