Club & Chapter News – Spring 2017
Last fall, NU clubs around the country were visiting breweries, performing community service, attending hockey games, honoring veterans, and just plain networking. No matter what the occasion, connecting with members of the Norwich family always makes for a good time. Looking for an NU club or event near you?
Events and more can be found online at alumni.norwich.edu/calendar. If you are interested in hosting a sendoff THIS summer for the Class of 2021, please contact Heather Socha via email or at 802-485-2303.
Approximately 30 people gathered at 14th Star Brewing Co. in St. Albans, Vt., owned by Steve Gagner ’03. They learned the history of how the company was started and were treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the brewing operations. Everyone in attendance received a free brew courtesy of Steve and 14th Star.
Roughly 15 alumni, friends, and family members spent an evening at the Harpoon Brewery in Boston’s Seaport District. After a tour of the brewery facilities, beer sampling and conversation took place in the Harpoon Beer Hall.
The NU Club of Houston gathered for an annual service event at the local food bank. The Norwich contingent were part of a team of nearly 200 volunteers that inspected, sorted, and packed thousands of food and beverage items, and stacked empty cardboard boxes for recycling. In attendance were Carl ’67 and Sandy Drechsel, Brian Ashe ’68, Rollins Collins ’69, David Brown ’79, and Amy and Alden Berkey.
The NU Club of the Upper Valley gathered at 5:45 a.m. to brew coffee, mix pancake batter, fry sausage, and cut fruit for last October’s Legacy March participants. Breakfast was served at 7 a.m. to 45 marchers and staff members, and everyone ate until fully fueled for the start of the 3-day, 50-mile trek. Breakfast was hosted in the Norwich Congregational Church, the original place of worship for NU cadets when the campus was located in Norwich, Vt. The marchers raised over $4,100 for the Veterans’ Place in Northfield, Vt.
The NU Club of Atlanta gathered at the Infinite Energy Arena in Duluth, Ga., on November 5 to enjoy a hockey game and cheer on the Atlanta Gladiators. This popular annual event drew more than 20 people.
Norwich alumni gathered in Portland, Ore., in November for the NU Club of Portland’s Meet and Greet. It was a great networking event, and while most folks already knew each other, new connections were made.
The NU Club of the First Coast/Golden Isles met in November at the home of Steve Canty ’74 for a pre-holiday turkey fry. All enjoyed delicious food and great conversation!
Last November’s Gettysburg Day of Remembrance was blessed with outstanding weather, and all in attendance had a wonderful time. Eric Ward ’86 led the tour, which explored the contributions of Vermonters—including Norwich alumni—at the Battle of Gettysburg. The day’s activities included a tour, parade, and evening luminaria ceremony. This year’s group was the largest yet!
