PRESIDENTIAL INAUGURAL PARADE, CIRCA 1977 –

More than 100 Norwich cadets marched in formation between the Philadelphia mounted police and the Alabama state float at President Jimmy Carter’s inaugural parade on January 20, 1977. Led by Major Robert Allee, the Norwich contingent comprised the state’s official color guard, the regimental staff, regimental band, drill team, and banner carriers. Early on along the parade route, the cadets were joined by Vermont Governor Richard Snelling and his wife, Barbara. Initially mistaken for gate-crashing bystanders, the gubernatorial couple had to quickly identify themselves to avoid being escorted back behind the police barricade. Later, while Major Allee was apologizing to the governor for not recognizing him, Snelling praised the group, saying, “You can tell the people back at Norwich University that your cadets represented Vermont in an outstanding manner. I was very proud of them.” Were you there? Can you identify the cadets in the photo? Send your parade memories from any inauguration to record@norwich.edu.  –Editor
