WOMEN’S FIELD HOCKEY, CIRCA 1976

Norwich University and Vermont College students joined forces in 1975 to form Norwich’s first women’s intercollegiate athletic team. Comprising 10 Vermont College women and 12 Norwich cadets, the squad practiced and competed on both campuses. That first squad played a nine-game schedule, including matches against a Castleton State team rumored to be co-ed, and one against Johnson State in which Nancy (Young) Fillip ’76 scored three goals. The program thrived for a decade under the tutelage of Coach Joan Mussmacher, but by the mid-1980s, the number of field hockey players had declined, and in 1987 the sport was discontinued in favor of adding a women’s soccer program. Today, Norwich fields an official co-ed club team with 14 active members. In this Homer Smith photo taken in 1976, Mussmacher gives her players some pre-game advice. Did you play field hockey between 1975 and 1986? Please share your memories via e-mail at record@norwich.edu.  –Audrey Seaman ’13
