Norwich scholar athletes defy “jock” stereotype

This spring, three Norwich student-athletes and two teams were recognized for their academic prowess.

The Cadets Wrestling Team placed three grapplers on the 2013–14 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-American Team: seniors Dave Pinto (3.56 GPA) and Anthony Joyce (3.28 GPA), and junior Steve Maldonado (3.32 GPA). In addition, the team placed 13th on the NWCA Division III Scholar Team Award list with a 3.402 team GPA. “We are very pleased to see our program recognized on the national level for our academic success,” said Head Coach Alex Whitney ’08. “As a coaching staff, we stress the importance of strong academics, and it is satisfying to see our message is getting through,” he added.

In addition, for the second straight season, the NU Women’s Cross- Country Team was named to the U.S. Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic team, posting a team GPA of 3.2. Head Coach Nick Cooper said, “I am very proud of our women’s team for earning this award. They work very hard at practice and even harder in the classroom.”
