June 24, 1921 – August 24, 2014,
The Embodiment of “Service Before Self.”

Vivian Bryan arrived at Norwich in 1954 with her husband, William “Pop” Bryan, and spent the early part of her career mentoring students. While Pop was alive, no cadet passed through Norwich without spending hours in their home. Over the years Vivian continued to welcome grateful students, alumni, and friends under her roof, providing meals, a bed, or just quiet refuge from the rigors of academic life. Many of them kept in touch, and every fall at Homecoming she would look forward to their visits.

After a fruitful career as a librarian, culminating as head of the Vermont State Law Library, Vivian turned her time and energies to Norwich’s Chaplin Library, volunteering daily to help computerize the system. Later, she gave freely of her technical experience and professional expertise to help define Kreitzberg Library as the “library of the future,” becoming a vital member of their volunteer support network and a generous benefactor of the Friends of Kreitzberg Library.

A familiar figure on the sidelines at Norwich athletic contests, Vivian enthusiastically cheered on the Cadets football, ice hockey, and rugby teams. She and Pop were also loyal members of the various booster organizations that supported them.

Vivian embodied the Norwich ideal of selfless service. At various times she volunteered as a driver for the Commandant and Student Life Offices, and as a member of the NU Women’s Association. A former director and Lifetime Member of the Partridge Society, she established the William “Pop” Bryan Scholarship Fund. In 2000, she was made an honorary Norwich alumna. A longtime member of the Board of Fellows, she was awarded their highest honor, the Outstanding Service Medallion, in 2001, and she never missed the Medallion dinner.

A devoted Northfield citizen, Vivian served her community as a scout leader, as an active member of CERV, and as a member of the Norwich University Staff/Faculty Club. In addition, she was a charter member of the Northfield Savings Bank Passport Club, going on many wonderful adventures with her best friend, the late Libby Hambleton. Vivian was an avid skier, joining the 70+ club and continuing to cross-country ski long after she had given up downhill.

Vivian was predeceased by two husbands, William Bryan in 1988, and John Taylor in 1995. She leaves a large and loving family, including two sons: Shawn W. Bryan ’70 and his wife, Helen, and Michael Bryan and his wife, Jane; four granddaughters, Rachel Bryan-Shatney ’99 (and her husband, Robert), Erin Bryan (and her husband, Michael Milkin), Jennifer Sugai ’05 (and her husband, Richard ’06), and Grace Bryan; and five great-grandchildren.

Contributions in Vivian’s memory may be made to Mayo Healthcare, Inc., 71 Richardson Street, Northfield, VT 05663.
