President Barack Obama presented the Medal of Honor to Senior Chief Special Warfare Operator Edward C. Byers Jr. ’16 during a ceremony in the East Room of the White House on February 29, 2016. Byers was cited for his courageous actions while part of a team that carried out the perilous rescue of an American civilian doctor being held hostage in Afghanistan in December 2012.

The citation reads, in part: “His bold and decisive actions under fire saved the lives of the hostage and several of his teammates. By his undaunted courage, intrepid fighting spirit, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of near certain death, Chief Petty Officer Byers reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.”

Byers is working toward a Bachelor of Science in Strategic Studies and Defense Analysis through Norwich University’s College of Graduate and Continuing Studies (CGCS). Learn more about Norwich’s online programs at online.norwich.edu.
